Need a literary agent

Some positive answers here, and certainly, one should persist - if you don't keep trying, you don't have a chance.

Nevertheless, nowadays the book trade is simply incredibly difficult, even for established authors with a track record. There have been some lacklustre efforts apparently intended to help newcomers into the limelight I remember Waterstones and Gardners setting up a scheme that just didn't appear to get anywhere; they were probably inundated, ad that's the problem today. It's very easy to self-publish, there are heaven knows how many new titles published every year, and a newcomer, whatever their skills, just get swamped.

I can say this, as my wife and I have two small publishing companies (no, I'm not promoting our services, just explaining why I believe I have some credibility). Getting our established authors into the "big time" is beyond words, and our experience is that one has to adapt, and forget about what traditional publishing used to be. It is a different game from even ten - fifteen years ago.

So, what to do? Yes, keep trying, but don't sit still in the meantime, do what most other people do - self publish your book. Many publishers don't take risks any more; there's so much they can do without using unsolicited material. What happens is that they monitor the self-pub statistics - these are even reported in the trade magazine, The Bookseller. Then, when a book shows promising sales levels, they can safely make an offer to the author. As an extreme example, think Fifty Shades of Grey.

Honestly, self-pub isn't the bad name that people incorrectly link with vanity publishing. It's a start, instead of sitting and waiting for good times. There's much more involved, but that's the start, and you can monitor your reviews on Amazon to see how the public like (or not ) your book.

I hope that helps, even though it's a different tack to the timeworn methods, and that's because they are now timeworn. New situations call for new solutions.

So then we should just give up and not bother with our dreams of success. Those comments are a wee bit negative , its hard i know to find agents, but believe me there out there. Try a little harder, and dont let anyone tell you , its impossible. Nothing is impossible once you put your mind to it. Have a little more faith people.
