Photograph Usage from the Internet

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this? I am currently writing an article for a magazine about a crime that was committed in America and I need images to support it.

Whilst there are dozens of photographs online, I assume they're all copyrighted. Can I still use them for my article?

Any advice would be really appreciated

Many thanks

Alison

I've used photographs taken from the internet (as a result of google seach) to go with a few articles I've written. Most have no mention or trace of origin but I still tend to put a caption like "photo courtesy of google search".

But there are indeed several websites that specifically demand money when using their photos.

Whenever I have had to use photographs in an article it has always been the paper or magazine that pays the fee. These can be only a few pounds so it is worth asking. Is this a UK magazine? Do you want a specific picture or would it be just a general picture?

If you know who took the picture it is worth dropping them a line and asking if you can use it if you give them a photo byline.
