Does anyone else share my problem? I've been writing for years as a hobby but would now like to attempt the great leap into something for others to read. The problem is I enjoy writing about a range of things and now I have no idea what type of book I want to write. How did you all decide? A pro's and con's list? A study of what the market is doing? A sign appearing on the mornings burnt toast?
Emma, I was exactly the same when I started writing. But the more I wrote the more confident I started to become with my ideas. Now almost 50,000 words later I have a work in progress. I've still got a way to go but only now am I confident enough to say 'yes I am writing a fantasy novel'.
Go for it and you never know what you will come up with!
Good luck!
Thanks everyone. I think my biggest problem is still confidence in my ideas. Must work on the positive thinking!
I was quite lucky to just stumble upon my idea. However if you are trying to pick a genre to help you come up with an idea, why don't you try mindmapping? You could make a mindmap of each genre that intrests you and slowly build-up book ideas from that.
I agree with Jonathan Hopkins as well. Both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis both said that they were writing the books they wanted to read but didn't exsist.
