PICK A GENRE, ANY GENRE ?!?

Does anyone else share my problem? I've been writing for years as a hobby but would now like to attempt the great leap into something for others to read. The problem is I enjoy writing about a range of things and now I have no idea what type of book I want to write. How did you all decide? A pro's and con's list? A study of what the market is doing? A sign appearing on the mornings burnt toast?

For myself it's what draws me in more, I like to read Fantasy and Real Life, but since my life hasn't been book worthy, I picked Fantasy to write, since I always like to come up with Fantasy day dreams that I can put away from an idea. So look at what you're drawn too and see if you can write in that genre.

I wrote what I wanted to read but couldn't find.

I tend to read a fairly narrow band of genre historical fiction (georgian/napoleonic military) but no-one was writing about the cavalry of that period. And since every other 'proper' historian and his dog called them rotten, I thought I'd try to set the record straight by telling their real story - in a novel. Because if I couldn't find novels about them I thought there'd be plenty of Sharpe fans on the lookout, too.

They say you should write what you know. I knew nothing about period cavalry but I do know about horses. 100+ non-fiction reads later, I know a bit about the history, too!
