Professional Editing. Yay or Nay?

Whilst attending an on-line forum and interesting questions was asked which produced an interesting answer.

"should you pay for a professional to edit your work before sending to an agent/publisher?"

One of the answers from an anonymous source was really interesting and got me thinking.

He or she said: "Having your work professionally edited can be frowned upon by a good publisher/agent and may throw your ability to write into question."

Not sure I agree but wanted some opinion on it.

I agree with, Damien.

This is a no-brainer. If you can afford a professional editor then use one.

Hi Mykie,

What Poppy cock. I did use a professional editor and a proofreader afterwards. Despite the proofreader finding very few errors they did find two or three. I would say it was well worth while.

If you are confident you can send your manuscript off to an agent knowing there are no errors go for it. But if you can afford an editor or a proofreader I would say its a must. You only get one shot.

Publishers who accept your MS would in turn use a editor.

Regards
