w-8ben

Has anyone got to grips with this form or managed to contact the IRS directly by phone?

Replies

I must have been lucky. I rang the tax office in UK for my unique tax reference, downloaded the w-8ben form from the tax office as amazon's form was too small, completed and posted all info required. Took about 4 weeks to get accepted but all accepted and now I am on Kindle all over the world... Very happy

Hi dor ... I did speak to the IRS and that's what they gave me. All seems ok now though I can't believe how complicated they make it. I may give them another ring to confirm it all.

Thanks for replying.

I can't give you direct answers because I've never done it myself, but you and Tony are talking about 2 different things.

The ITIN (which Tony is referring to) is for individuals and requires the notarised passport stamped by the embassy malarky.

You say you've received an EIN which is for companies, so I wonder if that's your issue? Are you publishing as a company or as an individual?

Lot's of people on the internet recommend getting an EIN rather than an ITIN because all it takes is a phone call, but you should only use one if it is appropriate otherwise you may run into problems further down the line. The internet should not be used as a reliable source of information about legal matters, not even me. Speak to Amazon, speak to the IRS, check out the tax laws in France.
