Today's trend may be different to next year... it's a hard one to predict!
Oh but I think there is a trend for historical fiction. Hilary Mantel, Philippa Gregory, Sarah Waters?? All very different authors but all hist-fic in their own ways. Although some agents are saying the market for it is now saturated. I really hope not!
Agree with Katie, though. You might as well fire a gun at the sky and hope to hit a star as write to a trend. It'll be old hat before you're finished. I reckon catching the zeitgeist is purely luck or, at best, a subconscious reading of social trends.

So says the slew of books coming out and going thru pub processes, and agents at LAF14.
