What's the average chapter length for your novel?

My completed manuscript stands at 83,000 words and is divided into forty chapters. My average chapter length is about 2,000 words, that's six or seven pages. I do have shorter chapters and a few that are longer.

I dont think it matters too much as long as each is a single complete story. In my current WIP of 120k words they vary from 1,500 to 10,000.

I think if you set a 'target' word count, you stand the chance of adversely effecting your writing.

Me too, I aim for an average of 3,000. Some are shorter, some longer. I think the key thing is not to worry too much about the word count, but write what you need to in each chapter so that you have a sensible break between chapters.

Hi Adrian,

I don't have a completed manuscript yet, but so far my average word count per chapter is c. 2000 too. It's an interesting question; thanks for asking!

Best,

Fliss
