Hi all,
I'm thinking of buying a copy of the Writers' & Artists' Yearbook 2017. Looks like this is where to find the agents. I also noticed there is Children's Writers' & Artists' Yearbook 2017.
My novel is for young adult, should I go for the Children's Writers' & Artists one?
Any advice will be very much appreciated.
Many thanks.
Melinda
DRAT!!!
Lorraine sneaked her reply in first while I was honing mine.
I'll get you for this, Lorraine! (shakes fist)
Hi, Melinda!
Bad news for indecisives! You actually have five (5) options:
a) Buying the WAYB (printed version) Advantages: It has everything that the CWAYB has, and more. At least, I understand this to be the case. Can be used for swatting pesky flies or pesky spouses (trying to interrupt your work).
b) Buying the CWAYB (printed version) Advantages: Saves you wading through lists that contain agents who will NOT consider writers for children. Can be used for swatting pesky flies or pesky spouses (trying to interrupt your work).
c) Signing up for the digital (on--line) version. Advantages: DEFINITELY contains all the material in both printed versions. (Correct me if I'm wrong, Admin!) If you've left your printed copy at home, you can access this from anywhere where you can access Internet. Has digital search function so that you can search. e.g., "agent, children's books, young adults" and the results come up in mere eons. (NB! Such a search will NOT turn up agents who mention young adults but not children's books. AND it will list agents who write: "We will not touch your feelthy leettle children's books! We SPEET on novels for young adullts." So, not a 100% foolproof filter, but mostly quite helpful.) Disadvantages: Unlike printed versions, it disappears like magic after 12 months (though they DO warn you when your time is running low). Not so handy as printed version if you find yourself on a desert island or (as in my case) halfway up a mountain without access to Internet. Not much use with pesky flies and/or spouses (unless you're willing to buy a new laptop.)
d) Any combination of 2 or 3 of the above. Advantage: Best of both worlds (or all 3). Disadvantage: More expensive.
e) Twiddling your thumbs. Advantage: Hmm...
If in doubt contact the publisher, but this is what they say about it in the Shop section above:
'The annual, bestselling guide to all aspects of the media and how to write and illustrate for children and young adults.'
Be aware that with all books of this type, you must check the websites of any agents or publishers before you approach them in case their rules have changed since the book was compiled.
