Writing a supernatural story

Does anyone have any tips for writing a supernatural story, I'm trying my first draft of one and I'm not sure how I can make it interesting and keep the reader guessing? Any advice or experience would be much appreciated. I've never written one before.

My tip is to read the best supernatural literature.

I read 'The Haunting' and I am now reading 'The Changeover'. Both the novels were written by Margaret Mahy. and both won the prestigious Carnegie Medal.

Her prose is brilliant and worth the read, irrespective of the genre.

Then again...

Having established that there is a vampire about we can have a young lady lined up to meet several different people in an evening and not make it anything like clear which one more than kisses her neck - or - perhaps she is the vampir... The clever thing is to create the doubt about wha, what, where and when - that can be both approaching an event and following it...

Hi Charley,

I love writing Supernatural stories, especially ones that come with a twist. Though to answer your question, I would say just simply give it a go. To make it exciting, try to be as descriptive in your scenes as possible. Don't just say - The vampire bit her neck - say something like - The vampire lowered his head to her neck. Her body shivered with a mixture of fear and desire. She loved him, feared him...etc.... And so forth. I'm sure you get the idea. In other words, a slow build up the tension will hopefully keep your audience reading.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your story.
