Is your protagonist male or female?

I wonder if most protagonists are the same sex as the author.

I actually did a count a few years back, and the result is: Equal male and female protagonists. But Neeraj is right, they always tend to be around my age at the time of writing.

About putting my personality into my characters... my past books, even the current one, always had mine and my best-friend's personalities- but my personality was never the main character.

I guess in all the cases, the main character has my BFF's personality (Even she doesn't know this)

My main character is female, she is based loosely on my wife

I have male and female of roughly equal significance in both of my current WIP. I feel it brings greater depth, perhaps more balance as well. And what a great tool for building believable tension!
