I wonder if most protagonists are the same sex as the author.

I can think of many male central characters that have been created by successful female authors; Hercule Poirot, Lord Peter Wimsey, Adam Dalgliesh, Harry Potter, Horrid Henry. I won’t carry on with a list, I’m sure others can think of more.
There are central female characters written by male authors, I’m sure, but a lot fewer spring to mind ('How To Be Good' off the top of my head).
This may be a bias in publication; male characters sell more books, perhaps?

Thanx Neeraj.
Hi Neeraj. One does have to examine one's inner reasoning from time to time or else the rut becomes forever!
