We’re delighted to announce the overview of the programme for NAWE’s 2023 Conference: Living as a Writer which is sponsored by York Centre for Writing based at York St John University and Bloomsbury.

Our programme sees a wealth of talks, workshops, networking opportunities, and knowledge sharing workshops from national and international NAWE members. We’ve also curated a constellation of workshops, how-to sessions and keynotes designed to act as creative rocket fuel for your writing and teaching practice.

Keynote: Living as a Writer: Patrice Lawrence MBE talks about how she has built her career around writing and how she works to ensure that children from marginalised backgrounds get to see themselves in her books

Keynote: What is the future of education?: Blake Morrison and Maura Dooley discuss how creative writing teaching has changed since they set up the Creative Writing MA at Goldsmiths

Launch of 'Making Hybrid Literature Events Accessible: A Resource Guide' with Kendal Poetry Festival and Manchester Poetry Library

Scenes from Early Parenthood – Creative Writing and the Parental Experience: writer Abi Curtis and Paige Davis (York St John University) present findings from an interdisciplinary project between creative writing and psychology exploring experiences of early parenthood

Visible Communities: translation in education and communities: National Centre for Writing writers and translators Sawad Hussain, Shagufta Sharmeen Tania and Sophie Lau explore the relationship between literary translation and diaspora communities in the UK. Chaired by Rebecca DeWald.

Plus ‘How to…’ sessions on Managing the Business Side of Freelancing with Julia Bird and Funding for Writers with Jonathan Davidson and Light My Fire: Writing and the Menopause with poet Katrina Naomi

Throughout the programme, we’ve threaded discussions, talks and workshops to help you nourish your writing and teaching practice and call for change in 2023.
