Writing for Audio

Online workshop, Saturday 1st July, 10am-4pm

Tickets £36 from https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/writing-for-audio-with-chris-gregory-and-emily-inkpen-tickets-634717375757

In the first part of this day workshop, we'll look at scriptwriting for audio drama alongside novelist and audio drama writer Emily Inkpen, author of our sci fi serial The Dex Legacy. We'll take you through some of the tricks and techniques you'll need to compensate for the lack of visuals and we'll delve into dialogue, writing sound directions, working with actors and honing your script.

The second part of the day will look at taking a script from page to production and the vital role the writer plays in this process. Using examples from The Dex Legacy we'll go behind the scenes to learn about casting the right voices for your script, working as part of a production team and the role the writer has in directing and designing the sound. Emily will be on hand to offer the full writer's perspective during this section.

Going into a bit more depth on a key aspect of audio drama we'll spend a bit of time looking at the monologue and how it can be a hugely effective means of giving your characters voices in audio drama. With plenty of examples, we'll share techniques and discover some tips for writing, and if you're feeling brave, performing and recording monologues.

Our final session will look at audio fiction and the ways in which you can use audio to bring your prose and poetry to life. We'll hear examples from performance poets and listen to best practice from the worlds of audio books as we explore ways in which you can adapt your writing to sound great when spoken aloud. I'll have some thoughts on the ways in which writers can use audio as part of their editing process even if their ultimate intention is not to publish the piece in an audio format.

Ending with recommendations for podcasts and radio shows to listen to and things to read to help you write for audio, this promises to be an immersive and inspiring day for anyone in love with radio and the spoken word.

All participants will receive a fact sheet and access to an Alternative Stories podcast series on the creation of audio drama. There'll be plenty of opportunities for questions along the way and you'll see and hear real examples from our productions and thoughts from our actors via multimedia content.
