Do you write creative non-fiction, from long-form essays to memoir?
Then join masterclass leader and non-fiction author Sam Johnson-Schlee (Living Rooms) as he shares his insight into writing non-fiction and writing it well.
He will be discussing his own process for writing Living Rooms, and how he engages with domestic objects in a political way. Through an investigation of objects - those that we surround ourselves with every day, those that shape how we experience the world - he will help you understand how to combine political and theoretical writing with creativity, as well as how to turn this into good writing! He will share his top tips on structuring long-form essays and non-fiction, and will investigate how non-fiction writers can bring playfulness into their subject.
Practical exercises will be embedded into the session and there will be an opportunity to ask questions of Sam during a closing Q&A.
This masterclass will be online via Teams. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks after the event has taken place.
Sam Johnson-Schlee is an academic and writer living by the sea in North Essex. He writes non-fiction and memoir about the politics and culture of everyday life. He is interested in how paying attention to familiar objects and practices can open up new perspectives on the world we live in.
His first book, LIVING ROOMS, was published by Peninsula Press in November 2022, and is about the domestic interior, what it feels like to live inside a commodity, and how we dream of something better from within the home.
He has a newsletter called Paying Attention.
