Writing Historical Fiction

14th November 2022 7:00pm to 8:30pm, Online

From period dramas to war-stories, political commentary to romance, historical fiction is not just one of today’s most well-read literary forms, but also one of the most varied. Whether you look to Hilary Mantel or Kiran Millwood Hargrave for inspiration, this masterclass will help you shape your research and writing process in order to construct a narrative embedded in history.

In this masterclass historical fiction novelist Lianne Dillsworth will be sharing her approach, and giving you the tools to work with history in your own writing.

You’ll learn how to weave the stories of your characters in with the historical events of the period you have chosen, how to plot a story that comes alive for a modern audience while balancing research and authentic details, and how to transport your readers to another time and place.

15 minutes will be reserved for a Q&A at the end of the masterclass.

This masterclass will be online, video platform to be confirmed. It will also be recorded so if you are unable to attend live, you'll be able to catch-up and access the recording for up to two weeks.

All attendees will be able to purchase Lianne Dillsworth’s book 'Theatre of Marvels' from our independent bookshop partner DRAKE at a discounted rate. DRAKE is a family run bookshop situated in Stockton on Tees, who champion independent publishers and authors.

This masterclass makes up part of The Writing Process, a series held in collaboration with Book Aid International.
