Before we do though, we would like to say thank you to everyone who entered. We've been blown away by the quality of the entries we received, and have thoroughly enjoyed spending the past week fighting alongside Vikings, strolling through 1950s Chicago and dancing with kings. We encourage each and every one of the (nearly) 500 of you who entered to pursue your stories, because they've been a pleasure to read.

It's time to announce the shortlist for our Historical Fiction competition!

However, decisions - eventually! - had to be made. Our shortlist of ten entries are as follows:

  • Scene by Anne Le Tissier
  • The Sirocco Winds by Ruba Abughaida

The winner and three runners up will be announced on the website on Tuesday 27th May. For full details of the competition and prizes, please take a look here.

The dogs have only just recovered from the terrible sight of their owner dancing around the living room, whooping like a prospector who's just discovered a gold nugget the size of a cricket ball.

Good luck all. I
