Books

I know that this community is based around writing but as Stephen King says, 'if you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time to write. Simple as that.'

I love reading and I was wondering whether anyone had read any good books recently that they would recommend?

Do you tend to stick to the same genre of book or do you read a mixture of everything?

I Quite enjoy reading the Classics as there is always a reason they are still being read and enjoyed despite the change in time. They are a good lesson in how to captivate an audience, in fact they are the masterclass in this.

I must also say that there is a great deal of merit in reading Fairy tales both foreign and domestic and to read folklore and Mythology some of their story lines and ideas are incomparable, they have inspired some of the most eminent writers;

Robert Graves and JRR Tolkien, are examples of this.

As for a modern book I would strongly recommend A small hand, by Susan Hill, it is a little book but nonetheless, rather fabulous.

Hi Laura, good question. I read all sorts and get different things back from each genre but I think good writing stands out regardless. Like Adrian I love Jane Austin, but I also read a lot of Bernard Cornwell, Phillipa Gregory, did all the Harry Potter books, Lee Child, Dan Brown, Deborah Harkness and in YA I like Josephine Angelini and Lauren Kate. These are just to name but a few. What do you enjoy?

I would definitely recommend A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness and the Starcrossed books by Josephine Angelini.
