Do you intend to kill your characters off?

A would-be author who intends to write a series of novels might have a better chance of hooking an agent or publisher.

Why kill off good characters when you can leave them in the ether to be recycled.

Oh and I believe the phrase you are looking for is Native Americans. Nothing to do with India really...

The Navajo in me is smiling.

3. Be courteous. We are a diverse community of people with diverse opinions. Speaking to and about people with respect means that everyone feels free to have their say.

4. When you see it, call it.

Keep the peace. Writers & Artists is not the place for threats, personal attacks, aggressive comments or hateful, bigoted or racist speech. We are a community of people with diverse beliefs, opinions and backgrounds, so please be respectful.

I respect Writers & Artists, for what they do and are, but I have doubts about this area. There has certainly been insidious hate speech. A lot of young folk come here, looking for guidance or to share. This hateful perspective is normalized by the inferred approval/quiet acceptance. I am not afraid to be a dissident voice.

Mark, I am in the same position. Those moments are waiting in the wings, weeping. My earlier post was a reflection of that (grounded in the technical).

I seem to remember a similar question a few months ago... so I shall give the same answer, which was, I have a core group of characters who are constant through my 7 (or 5, depending on the depth I go to) books, but the others are fair game for a spot of death-dealing. I think the important thing is never to make death gratuitious - such as in A Game of thrones - but to give every 'death' a purpose and proper ramifications for the survivors. I know exactly which characters are going to die and why. In fact, I might go and snuffle quietly into a tissue while I think about it.
