I really enjoy well written short stories. As mentioned in one of the other comments good short stories are very challenging to write, needing the text to not only relate what's happening but also to skilfully drop in bits of information so that the reader can fill out the 'background'. It's a real art and very different to having the luxury of an almost endless number of pages to play with when writing a novel.

I pretty much read everything! I like to read short story anthologies as you get an introduction to authors you might never have read otherwise.

Often I'll write a short story if I'm playing with characters, seeing if an idea has enough life in it to become a book eventually.
