I've taken to reading them lately as part of trying to learn as much as I can about the art of writing. Also, when I'm traveling long distances I prefer to have a collection of short stories to somehow control my inevitable anxiety. It works. I think it's challenging to write a really good one and I can't think of them as chapters since you have to write a complete comprehensible story.
I like to think of short stories as chapters and vice-versa, as they have beginnings, middles and ends.. Self-contained watertight compartments with broad themes. I believe a would-be author can learn much from short stories. They can help determine chapter lengths according the theme of individual chapters and how they fit within the genre of your novel.
Hardly ever. I read far more historical non-fiction than is good for me at the mo, looking for apparently useless facts or gossip that might make a story, or part of one. They're there, if you look for them and use a bit of imagination.
I much prefer reading with some depth, not usually possible within the constraints of short-storytelling, so stick to novels when it comes to fiction.
