Once a week I attach all my work in an e-mail and send it to myself in case this should happen. At least it'll still exist in cyberspace.
Good luck and hopefully it's still possible to restore your hard drive so not everything is lost.
I know the feeling my old laptop was always shutting down and I'd often end up loosing chapters but never a full work. My advice would be to keep tons of back ups. I have two electronic back ups and two printed versions of my completed work. I don't know what I would do if I lost my book I wish you the best of luck in your quest to restore your manuscript:)
That kind of thing almost happened to me too, you know. My laptop got infected and got ruined, but fortunately I kept copies of my work on my email and USB's. Well, I can guess It must be pretty frustration.
