Well, I'm going to have to start over, I will be investing in a nice shiny new external hard drive to store my works on

I had an 'iffy' machine once so used to save completed chapters to a CD and have carried on ever since. Have you ever backed your laptop up to disk? I know some writers email copies to themselves or family so their work's held on a remote mail server in case of accidents.
You have to save stuff - a pen drive is cheap enough and works well if you don't trust disks.
