Researching children's novels

Hi all, I'm working on a novel for 9-12 year olds in the supernatural/adventure genre and I was wondering if anyone can recommend any books for me to read for my research?

I agree with Inkheart and the Chronicles of Narnia and anything by Tolkien is complete must. Although the books are not aimed at nine to twelve year olds Graceling and Fire are very good to try because the worlds that Kristin Cashore creates are very vivid and engaging.

Also not exactly aimed at nine to twelve years olds, but the Wolves of Mercy trilogy by Maggie Stievater are really good as well and might give you a 'flavour' of the supurnatural genre's writing style.

Hope these helped!

I just had a peak at my 13 year old son's bookshelf and see that he's read a wide cross section:

The Chronicles of Narnia

Harry Potter - all of them

Drake's Comprehensive Compendium of Dragonology

Percy Jackson stories by Rick Riordan

Inkheart by Funke

The Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings trilogy

Perhaps you could read fantasy and adventure as two separate genres. some of the books my son's enjoyed the most have been the Alex Ryder series by Anthony Horowitz, the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore and most recently the Hunger Games series. I mention these because he'd read all of them by the time he was 11 years old (with the exception of the Hunger Games which he's only just finished).

I hope this helps a little.

It also has a bit of the RPG narrative style.
